According to the centre’s official update shared on social media, the facility sustained enough smoke damage to force the closure for the busy holiday period.

They also expressed gratitude to the Vernon Fire Department for their quick response and support.

An earlier ExNews report detailed that Vernon Fire Rescue Service crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the building around 8:45 a.m. Firefighters found flames burning at the rear near a covered doorway, quickly extinguished the visible fire, and cut through a section of wall to check for hidden extension.

No injuries were reported. Several RCMP officers, BC Ambulance Service, and BC Hydro personnel also responded.

One man in the area was questioned by police.

The Okanagan Science Centre stated that the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact Const. Sarah Evans with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP at 250-545-7171.
