Fire at Vernon Science Centre Quickly Extinguished

VERNON, B.C. Friday May 15 2026 - Vernon Fire Rescue Service crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the Vernon Science Centre early Friday morning and quickly brought the blaze under control.

Firefighters arrived to find flames burning at the rear of the building near a covered doorway.
Crews extinguished the visible fire and then cut through a section of wall to check for any hidden extension.
As the saw cut into the structure, smoke was seen escaping from the opening. Ventilation fans were later set up at several points around the building.
Several RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, and BC Hydro also responded to the scene.
One man in the immediate area was questioned by police.
Calls about the blaze began coming in around 8:45 a.m. Crews cleared the scene approximately 45 minutes later, around 9:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire has not been released. No word on the extent of the damage or if this fire will affect operating hours of the Science Centre.
