U.S. charges 30-year-old Washington state resident in Tumbler Ridge school shooting

Today, from Seattle, Washington, a joint press conference revealed that a 30-year-old Washington state resident from Bellingham has been arrested and charged in the United States in connection with the horrific attack.

Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd, FBI Seattle, and the BC RCMP said the accused is charged with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country, which can carry up to life in prison.

According to officials, the accused had allegedly been in repeated contact with the shooter, offered advice, sent money, and agreed to livestream the attack.

Floyd said the accused allegedly had the information and ability to alert police, even discussed that possibility, but chose not to.

Officials allege that after the shooter killed two relatives at home and could not start a car, the accused gave advice on how to get it running so the shooter could drive to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where five students and a staff member were killed and others were injured.

According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Mike Harrington, the two met online and, over at least six months, their talks allegedly turned to violence.

He said the accused allegedly provided technical help and items for the shooting, stayed awake after a night shift to run a livestream meant to increase the shooter’s notoriety, and kept helping after the home killings had already begun.

BC RCMP Assistant Commissioner Elijah Rain said eight people died in the February attack and that the Canadian investigation remains open, with further charges still under consideration.

According to officials, the pair allegedly met about three years earlier on Omegle and did not appear to have met in person.

A livestream attempt on Twitch lasted about 20 seconds before it shut down, officials said.

The accused was arrested Tuesday morning in Bellingham and, according to officials, identifies as female.

The allegations have not been tested in court.
