Active Living Centre Gets A Sign
October 6 2026 - A sign that Vernon’s Active Living Centre is close to opening went up in the most literal way Tuesday afternoon, as crews installed the V in a wall-sized VERNON on the building’s white exterior.

Workers on a ladder set the oversized grey letters while cardboard still covered parts of the wall. Beside them, smaller lettering reads ACTIVE LIVING CENTRE.
The sign faces the new intersection on 43rd Avenue, where sidewalk work and landscaping were still unfinished.

The City of Vernon has not set a public opening day. Substantial completion is targeted for October 30, with the facility tentatively expected to open to the public in December. Staff, including lifeguards, are scheduled to begin training around November 1.
City recreation staff have described about six weeks of operational readiness after completion, equipment installation, staff training, and facility testing, before the public is let in.
The project dates to an October 15, 2022 referendum, when Vernon voters approved borrowing $121 million by nearly 61 percent.
In February 2024, council approved up to $15 million more for items beyond that original design: a major waterslide, a WaveBall, a NINJACROSS course, extra spray features, a cold plunge, and a longer four-lane walking track, along with cost escalation, Syilx design elements, net-zero-ready construction, and Rick Hansen Gold certification.

The project is capped at $135.9 million. Construction started in April 2024 at 3501 43rd Avenue, west of Kal Tire Place.
The centre is planned as a roughly 130,000-square-foot hub with a 50-metre pool, a teaching pool, a leisure pool, a fitness centre, an indoor track, and a double gymnasium.
