Growing Concern For Trees, Shrubs and Flowers As Water Restriction Approach Week 6
July 12, 2026 - Many residents in the Greater Vernon area are noticing early signs of stress in their backyard trees, shrubs, and ornamental flowers as Stage 3 water restrictions continue into their sixth week.

Yellowing leaves, wilting, and premature leaf drop are among the common symptoms of drought stress, even on well-established plants. This is raising worries for some who have invested time and money into their gardens.
Under the current restrictions (in effect since June 4), residents can still legally water trees, shrubs, and flowers, but only within strict limits:
Up to 2 days per week
Between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Using a hand-held garden hose only (no sprinklers or soaker hoses)
Short, targeted watering at the base of the plants
The allowances are designed to help protect valued residential plantings while conserving the region’s strained water supply.
Stage 3 rules remain in full effect with no lifting date announced. Residents are encouraged to follow the permitted watering schedule to give their plants the best chance during the ongoing dry conditions.
