Heat Wave Grips North Okanagan

Vernon, B.C. – July 17, 2026 - With a heat warning firmly in place across the North Okanagan, local authorities are urging residents to stay cool and look out for both people and pets as scorching temperatures continue.

The City of Vernon and Vernon North Okanagan RCMP issued back-to-back reminders this week, emphasizing that the current weather is simply unfit for man or beast.

City officials are encouraging everyone to take precautions during the extreme heat.

Residents and visitors can beat the temperatures at several public cooling spots open during regular hours, including Kal Tire Place, the Vernon Museum & Archives, the Okanagan Regional Library (Vernon Branch), and City Hall.

Outdoor options like Lakeview and Lavington pools, local beaches, parks, and shaded green spaces are also available, though proper precautions such as staying hydrated, limiting strenuous activity during peak heat, and wearing light clothing are strongly advised.

“Check in on family, friends, and neighbours, especially older adults, young children, and those with health conditions or without air conditioning,” the City noted.

Local organizations are also providing extra support for vulnerable and unsheltered residents.

On the pet front, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is warning owners not to leave dogs or other animals unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes with windows cracked or in the shade. Interior temperatures can rise to dangerous levels rapidly, risking serious heat-related illness or death.

“The safest place for your pet on a hot day is at home, with access to water, shade, and a cool spot to rest,” police said.

If you see a pet in distress in a vehicle, note the licence plate and call police rather than attempting to break a window yourself.

Recreation programs are continuing as scheduled, though the Vernon Recreation Centre pool may see temporary changes due to air-handling issues. Residents should check the schedule online before heading out.

Stay cool out there, Vernon, keep the water handy and the furry friends inside.
