Students Praised After Suspicious Pickup Approaches Them in Vernon

December 3 2025, Vernon, B.C. - The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are commending a group of elementary students who handled a suspicious encounter safely on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m. on December 2, several students walking home along 20th Street were twice approached by an older Caucasian man driving a grey pickup truck. Police say the man first offered the children a ride, which they refused.

He then stopped a second time to ask for directions. The students stayed together, kept their distance, and took out their phones, prompting the driver to leave the area.

Officers responded soon after but were unable to locate the truck.

RCMP are investigating the incident in partnership with School District 22.

Const. Chris Terleski said the students’ actions were exactly what police encourage, noting the importance of regularly reminding children about “street proofing” and general safety around strangers.

Tips and resources are available through the BC RCMP website.
