Solar Eclipse Over Vernon

Updated: Oct 15

We managed to catch a few minutes of the event between rain clouds

On Oct. 14, 2023, a visible annular solar eclipse occurred over British Columbia. Solar eclipses happen when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align, fully or partially. There are different types of solar eclipses based on the Moon's distance from Earth:

  1. Total Solar Eclipse: The Moon completely blocks the Sun, darkening the sky like dawn or dusk. Viewers in the Moon’s shadow experience totality and can see the Sun’s corona. The next total solar eclipse over North America will be on April 8, 2024.

  2. Annular Solar Eclipse: The Moon is farther from Earth, appearing smaller and not fully covering the Sun. This creates a ring-like appearance.

  3. Partial Solar Eclipse: Only part of the Sun is covered, forming a crescent shape. Outside the Moon’s inner shadow, observers see a partial eclipse.

  4. Hybrid Solar Eclipse: Earth’s curved surface can cause the eclipse to shift between annular and total, known as a hybrid solar eclipse.

Remember, it's never safe to look directly at the Sun during an annular eclipse without proper eye protection like solar viewing or eclipse glasses.

Magical! Since I didn't get to see it live, it's a treat to see it here. Thank you!
