Smoke Rises from Greater Vernon Landfill

May 3 2026 - A column of smoke south of Vernon visible for kilometres around 4 PM Sunday afternoon came from the Greater Vernon Landfill.

The fire is believed to have been in an area of the facility not generally accessible to the public.

RDNO staff were already working the fire with heavy equipment and water hoses when BX-Swan Lake Fire Department crews arrived.

Firefighters and staff were able to quickly knock down the blaze, significantly reducing the smoke. Cleanup of hotspots took longer.

No official cause has been announced. No change in dump hours has been announced.
