Thick Wildfire Smoke Blankets North Okanagan, Pushing Air Quality to ‘Very High Risk’

August 6 2026 - Dense wildfire smoke has settled over the North Okanagan, driving the Air Quality Health Index to 10+, the highest possible rating of “very high risk”, and prompting a yellow air quality warning from Environment Canada.

Residents in Vernon and surrounding communities woke up Thursday to hazy skies and reduced visibility as smoke from multiple provincial wildfires lingered in the valley.

Officials say conditions can shift quickly with changing winds, and the elevated risk is expected to continue through at least Friday in areas affected by smoke.

People with heart or lung conditions, children, the elderly and pregnant individuals are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity. The general public is urged to reduce or reschedule outdoor exercise, especially if experiencing coughing, throat irritation or other symptoms.

Authorities recommend staying indoors with windows closed and using air filtration where possible.

The warning remains in effect as firefighters continue battling blazes across the Southern Interior. Smoke levels can vary hour by hour.
