First Day of Police Roadblocks Lead to Fewer Impaired-Driving Prohibitions

Vernon, BC - December 12, 2025 – Police across British Columbia checked more drivers and issued fewer impaired-driving prohibitions during the opening night of the Winter Impaired Driving Campaign, an enforcement effort that included highways frequently used by North Okanagan motorists.

During the December 6 Light Up The Province enforcement night, officers stopped 52,091 vehicles provincewide and issued 190 impaired-driving prohibitions, according to BC Highway Patrol. That compares to 222 prohibitions in 2024, when fewer than 44,000 vehicles were checked.

In Central BC, a region that includes Kelowna, Kamloops, and Interior highways travelled by North Okanagan drivers, police checked 3,213 vehicles, resulting in 23 driving prohibitions, 76 tickets, and 10 roadblocks.

Inspector Adam Tallboy with BC Highway Patrol says Mandatory Alcohol Screening continues to play a key role in enforcement, allowing officers to identify impaired drivers who may not show obvious signs during an initial interaction.

RCMP say increased impaired driving enforcement will continue across the Interior and throughout the North Okanagan corridor for the remainder of the holiday season.
