March 10, 2025: According to the latest stats published by ICBC, the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and 39th Avenue has seen 27 crashes between 2021 and 2023, with seven resulting in injuries.
To address safety concerns and improve traffic flow, construction of a new roundabout at the intersection has begun.
The City of Vernon is replacing the existing four-way stop with a modern roundabout to manage increasing traffic volumes, reduce congestion, and enhance pedestrian safety.
The project will also introduce a dedicated left-turn lane from Pleasant Valley Road to 20th Street, aiming to minimize delays and lower the risk of rear-end collisions.
During construction, the intersection will be fully closed, with detour routes in place. The project includes upgrades to underground utilities, installation of new street lighting, pedestrian crossing flashers, curbs, gutters, and retaining walls. Anti-skid pavement will be added to help mitigate downhill speeds approaching the roundabout.
The Province of BC is contributing over $1.1 million to the project through the Growing Communities Fund, with the remaining costs covered by the City of Vernon.
The total budget for the project is $4.83 million, with funding sourced from Transportation Development Cost Charges, an infrastructure levy, and sewer reserves.
Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
