NexusBC Offers Free Self-Defense Classes for Seniors in Vernon During BC Seniors Week

VERNON, BC - NexusBC Community Resource Centre is hosting two free self-defense classes tailored specifically for seniors as part of BC Seniors Week celebrations.
The workshops, led by Sifu Rob of Breakthrough Martial Arts, will take place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the Schubert Centre (3505 30th Avenue).
12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.: Class for ages 60+ using mobility aids
1:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.: Class for ages 60+ who are active and mobile
Participants will learn practical awareness strategies, prevention techniques, and simple, effective self-defense moves suited to real-world situations. Classes are designed to be accessible, beginner-friendly, and grouped by mobility level in a supportive, welcoming environment.

“These classes are about empowerment,” said Lee Brinkman, Marketing and Events Manager with NexusBC. “We want seniors to feel capable, aware and confident in their everyday lives.”The sessions are sponsored by Southward Medical Supplies and Breakthrough Martial Arts.
They form part of NexusBC’s broader BC Seniors Week programming, which also includes a Personal Safety workshop and an open house in Armstrong.
