October 9 2026 - It's a good to to winterize if you’re travelling mountain highways in B.C.’s Southern Interior (winter tires are required on most provincial mountain highways).

Light Snow on Coquihalla, Okanagan Connector and SilverStar
Highway 5 about 24 km north of Merritt at Helmer Interchange, looking north Friday evening.

Light snow was reported overnight Friday on higher elevations of the Coquihalla and Okanagan Connector, with a light dusting at SilverStar near Vernon.

No official DriveBC winter-driving alerts have been issued and the highways remain open.

Environment Canada’s forecast for the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C, Merritt–Kelowna) called for rain changing to periods of snow this evening (snow level ~1,500 m, local 2–4 cm, gusty winds early), with further periods of snow on Saturday at the same levels before becoming mainly cloudy overnight.

On the Coquihalla, there are reports of light wet snow between Kamloops and Merritt, especially from the Logan Lake cutoff to the Surrey Summit/Helmer Road area.

Temperatures were around 1°C; snow was not sticking to the main driving surface but accumulating on shoulders and in ditches.

SilverStar’s forecast showed Friday rain and snow (high 6°C, low 0°C) and Saturday rain and snow (high 3°C, low -3°C), followed by clearer and colder weather Sunday through Tuesday.

Vernon is expected to see rain with a 30 per cent chance of showers.

Mountain weather can change quickly, and remember, winter tires are required on most provincial mountain highways. Check DriveBC.ca before you go.
