August 30 2026 - Firefighters from three departments and RCMP officers responded just after 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to a blaze in steep, wooded terrain near Kalamalka Road and College Way after callers reported trees candling.

Coldstream and Lavington fire halls were dispatched to the scene.
At the same time, Vernon Fire Rescue was sent to the north end of the fire on Reservoir Road.
Locating the fire and reaching it proved difficult because of the steep slopes and darkness.
Crews had to work their way down the hillside before they could attack the flames.
Once they reached the blaze, they extinguished it quickly.
Coldstream Fire, Lavington Fire, Vernon Fire Rescue and RCMP all attended.
Investigators have not released a confirmed cause. At this early stage, its suspected the fire started from a campfire at an unhoused encampment.
No injuries or damage to homes were reported in the information available Sunday.
The incident is a reminder of how quickly a small fire can climb trees in dry, sloped forest next to residential streets.
