May 20 2026 - A 24-year-old woman is presumed drowned after the vehicle she was driving veered off the road and plunged into the fast-moving North Thompson River Sunday evening.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6:21 p.m. near Schubert Drive and Birch Avenue. A 21-year-old female passenger was rescued from the water by three bystanders who jumped in to help. Both the passenger and one rescuer were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Royal Inland Hospital.
Kamloops RCMP, Search and Rescue, Fire and Rescue, and RCMP Air Services searched the river and shoreline into Monday, but efforts to find the driver have been unsuccessful.
“The Kamloops RCMP wishes to recognize the bystanders for their bravery,” said Supt. Jeff Pelley. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the woman who is presumed drowned.”
The woman’s family is being notified. The cause of the crash remains under investigation
