North Okanagan Cold Snap Follows Milder Than Usual Winter Start
Vernon, BC - December 28, 2025A winter cold snap has settled over the North Okanagan, marking a sharp shift from the milder-than-usual conditions that defined much of December in Vernon and Coldstream.

Environment Canada data shows temperatures near -10.2°C today, with wind chill making it feel closer to -15°C, significantly colder than typical late-December norms, where average highs hover around -2°C and lows near -8°C. Despite the chill, no extreme cold warnings are currently in effect.
The cold air has been reinforced by a temperature inversion, trapping colder air in valley communities while higher elevations experience slightly less severe conditions. Skies remain mostly clear to partly cloudy, with only light flurries expected and little accumulation.
Forecasters say the cold snap is unlikely to deepen much further. A gradual warming trend is expected to begin early this week, with daytime highs climbing toward 0°C by New Year’s Eve and into early January. No major snowstorms are anticipated, though intermittent light flurries could continue.
Road conditions across the North Okanagan remain generally stable, but drivers are advised to watch for slippery spots, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Winter tires remain essential.
And for those who feel the valley isn’t cold enough, SilverStar Mountain Resort is delivering full winter conditions, with base temperatures dipping as low as -19°C, keeping the slopes crisp and wintry through the weekend.
