GoFundMe launched for Lumby couple after devastating house fire
A Lumby couple is rebuilding their lives after losing their home and RV to a fire on Highway 6 late last month.
The blaze broke out shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20, in the 3300 block of Highway 6. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the property, with some witnesses reporting hearing loud explosions.
The Lumby District Fire Department responded to the call and was assisted by crews from Lavington and BX/Swan Lake fire halls. Traffic on Highway 6 was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic while firefighters battled the flames. No injuries were reported.
The fire destroyed the home of Bev and Colin Campbell, along with their RV. Their friends Peter and Shelley Kutney have now organized a GoFundMe to help them recover.
The fundraiser reads in part:“Peter and Shelley are fundraising for our friends Bev and Colin Campbell, who tragically lost their home and their RV in a house fire in Lumby, BC… They escaped the fire with the clothes on their backs and hope to eventually replace their home in Lumby. The Campbell’s express gratitude to the Lumby Volunteer Fire Department members and the police officers who were so helpful… Any donations will be gratefully received and help them to rebuild their lives and their home.”
The post notes that although the couple had insurance, rising building costs and the loss of personal belongings mean they face a significant financial gap.
At their age, both said to be in their late sixties, its speculated they would also not qualify for a mortgage.
The GoFundMe campaign is titled “Help Colin and Bev rebuild after Lumby house fire.”
