Heat Warning Continues in North Okanagan as Temperatures Remain High

Vernon, B.C. July 21, 2026 - Environment Canada’s yellow Heat Warning remains in effect for the North Okanagan, with another stretch of very hot weather forecast for the coming days.

Temperatures are expected to remain high into the weekend

Wednesday is expected to reach a high of 36°C, followed by 35°C on Thursday and 34°C on Friday. Temperatures are forecast to stay in the low-to-mid 30s through at least the weekend before easing slightly early next week.

Overnight lows will dip only into the mid-to-upper teens, offering limited relief.

A light haze from distant wildfire smoke is currently visible across parts of the North Okanagan.

The BC Air Quality Health Index remains in the Low to Moderate Risk range (mostly 3–6), with PM2.5 levels generally low to moderate.

While the smoke is not heavy, the combination of even moderate air quality and prolonged high temperatures can place extra stress on the body. Heat causes faster and deeper breathing, which can increase exposure to fine particles, while also adding strain on the heart and lungs at the same time.

With several more days of extreme heat ahead, residents are reminded to take simple precautions:

• Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

• Stay indoors or in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day (roughly 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

• Limit strenuous outdoor activity.

• Check regularly on family members, neighbours, and friends who are more vulnerable — especially seniors, children, and people with chronic health conditions.
