Vernon, BC March 31 2026 - A early-morning apartment fire in Vernon last week has resulted in one fatality, according to the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, around 6:15 a.m., Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to a structure fire at Parkview Garden Apartments in the 2300-block of 36th Street (2312 36th Street).
Mutual aid was requested from the Armstrong Spallumcheen, Coldstream, and BX fire departments, with BC Hydro, BC Emergency Health Services, and RCMP also attending the scene.
Witnesses reported intense flames shooting higher than the two-storey building as the fire rapidly spread through the west end of the complex, starting in a ground-floor unit.
Firefighters quickly evacuated residents, with approximately 20–30 people displaced. Emergency Support Services (ESS) and a BC Transit bus assisted those affected, many of whom waited in blankets at the scene.
The fire was brought under control by around 9 a.m., shifting to mop-up operations. However, during firefighting efforts, what are believed to be human remains were discovered inside one of the units. RCMP confirmed that one occupant was home at the time of the fire and was sadly unable to escape.
The structure sustained significant damage, with at least four apartments rendered uninhabitable and additional units requiring assessment and repairs before residents can return. Utilities to the building were shut off for safety during the initial response and damage assessments.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released, but based on the findings so far, criminality is not suspected.“We want to extend our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased,” stated Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.
The BC Coroners Service has been notified and is conducting a concurrent investigation.
Earlier reports on the day of the fire noted unconfirmed accounts of one person possibly being trapped briefly or removed on a stretcher, but initial information indicated no injuries.
The discovery of the fatality was confirmed by RCMP on March 31.
The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is investigating the incident (File #2026-4697).
