7 Vehicle Accident On Highway 97 Vernon Causes Traffic Disruption, Christmas Eve.
Vernon, BC - Just before 10 AM, December 24th, a collision involving 7 vehicles occurred at the North end of Vernon on Highway 97. The incident occurred in the Southbound lanes, near the 27th Street overpass.
Seven vehicles were involved in the accident. Fortunately, there were no reported life-threatening injuries.
Emergency response teams from BX Swan Lake Fire Rescue, Vernon Fire Rescue, multiple BC Ambulances, and RCMP, swiftly attended the scene.
The multi-vehicle collision forced the closure of Southbound traffic on Highway 97 for several hours.
Northbound traffic was also impacted, reduced to a single lane. The road closure lasted until just after noon on Sunday.
No official cause for the accident has been released.
Witnesses at the scene noted the presence of fog in the area, along with possible icy road conditions. It's not known if these were factors that contributed to the multi-vehicle pileup.
One of the vehicle occupants required extrication.
Eight people were either treated at the crash scene or taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
At least two of the eight individuals were taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital (VJH) for further medical attention. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
