Spallumcheen Man Arrested With Assistance From RCMP Helicopter.

Updated: Feb 9

A 35-year-old man was apprehended with the assistance of an RCMP helicopter, which was engaged in a search and rescue effort in Coldstream.

The man, aged 35, was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal a security system from a residence in Armstrong at approximately 2:45 PM on January 4, 2024.

The homeowner watched the act in progress and notified the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

Before law enforcement could reach the Wood Avenue address, the suspect departed in a stolen pickup truck.

The truck was located on Otter Lake Road, where, according to RCMP, it was speeding away from the crime scene.

Regrettably for the suspect, an RCMP Air Section helicopter was already in the vicinity, aiding Coldstream Search and Rescue in their mission to locate the missing 83-year-old Robert Baines.

The helicopter was redirected to assist the RCMP in pursuing their suspect.

The pilot tracked the pickup truck and informed ground officers that the suspect had abandoned the vehicle, fleeing on foot.

A containment perimeter was established and with support from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, they apprehended the suspect without further incident.

A 35-year-old man from Spallumcheen is facing various criminal charges, including dangerous driving and failure to stop for police. The incident remains under investigation.
