Mine Creek Wildfire Forces Coquihalla Highway Closure
Kamloops, BC – September 3, 2025 – A rapidly spreading wildfire near Mine Creek has prompted the closure of the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) as officials struggle to contain the blaze.
The Mine Creek wildfire, identified as Fire Number K61891, was discovered on September 1, 2025, and has since grown to 483 hectares. According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire is currently out of control, meaning it is spreading beyond existing fire lines. Lightning is suspected as the cause of the blaze.

Reports from the scene suggest that the wildfire has already reached the highway and may have damaged nearby power lines. Authorities also warned that some vehicles were on the Coquihalla as the fire approached, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and emergency personnel.
Drive BC has confirmed that the highway is closed in both directions due to wildfire activity. A detour is in place via Highway 1 and Highway 3, and commercial vehicles are prohibited from using Highway 8.
