Vernon Council Approves Transit Hikes

June 9 2026 - Vernon City Council has approved phased increases to transit fares for the Vernon Regional Transit System.
On June 8, 2026, Council unanimously approved (Option 3) the phased fare change recommended by BC Transit.
Mayor Victor Cumming moved an amendment to implement the changes “as soon as possible” (targeting September or October 2026 instead of April 2027) and to schedule another fare review in 2028.
Key Local Fare Changes (Option 3)
Single Ride (including handyDART): $2.50 → $3.00
DayPASS: Remains $6.00 (now with automatic fare capping — pay for two single rides = unlimited travel for the rest of the day)
30-Day Adult Pass: $55 → $65 (2027) → $70 (2028) → $75 (2029)
30-Day Concession Pass (High School, Post-Secondary, Seniors): $40 → $55 (2027) → $60 (2028) → $65 (2029)
10-Ride Tickets: To be discontinued
Youth Travel Program: Expanded to free for ages 18 & under (was 12 & under)
Other Major Changes Approved:
Introduction of separate Local and Regional (Route 90) fare structures
New ProPASS (employer payroll deduction program)
New U-PASS for post-secondary students
Maintained interoperability with Kelowna Regional Transit
The adjustments are expected to improve the transit system’s cost recovery from approximately 17% to 21%.
Final implementation still requires approval from the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) and the District of Coldstream.
