March 19 2026 - A smoke scare prompted a response from the Vernon Fire Rescue Service Wednesday afternoon, but crews quickly determined there was no active fire.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment building in the 2800 block of 35th Street just before 3:30 p.m. on March 18, after reports of smoke on the second floor.
As a precaution, residents evacuated the building while firefighters investigated the source.
Officials say the smoke was traced to a mechanical issue rather than a fire, and no injuries were reported.
