March 20 2026 - The City of Vernon says a section of 24th Avenue is slated for closure as work begins on a new supportive housing development, though the road remained open as of Friday morning.
The City previously announced that 24th Avenue between Highway 97 and 33rd Street would close starting March 20 to allow for demolition of the former Polson Park Motel and construction at 3201 24th Avenue. However, as of 9 a.m. Friday, the side street, located just off Highway 97 across from Polson Park in an area some locals refer to as “Hospital Hill”, remained open, with no heavy equipment on site.
While 24th Avenue itself is a smaller roadway, its proximity to Highway 97 could make construction activity more noticeable to passing drivers.
According to BC Housing, the project will redevelop the site into a five-storey building with 48 studio and one-bedroom homes. The units are intended as supportive housing for adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
The development will include indoor and outdoor common areas, a central kitchen, laundry facilities, and on-site staff space. Support services are expected to feature 24/7 staffing, meals, life-skills training, and access to health and community supports.
Turning Points Collaborative Society has been selected to operate the building.
The new project will replace 28 supportive housing units that have been operating at the motel since 2022.
