RCMP investigating the death of a paraglider

Thursday, July 13th, 2023 around 8 a.m., Vernon RCMP attended the 200-block of Mabel Lake Road, Lumby and found BC Ambulance personnel providing medical attention to an unresponsive paraglider pilot in a field.


The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased is a 63-year-old Vernon man who is reported to have been an experienced hang-gliding pilot who was learning paragliding at the time of the accident.


No criminality is suspected, and the BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent investigation.




Hit and run vehicle caught by Vernon police

On Wednesday, July 12th, 2023, around 5:30 p.m., Vernon RCMP located a vehicle allegedly involved in several incidents recently reported to police including a hit and run earlier that day.


The vehicle, described as a white Volkswagen Tiguan, was spotted earlier by an RCMP member near 25th Ave and 32nd St. Vernon.


Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP,

"The officer activated their emergency lights and pulled in front of the suspect vehicle that was stopped in traffic. The driver of the vehicle reversed, then drove ahead, hitting the front corner of the police vehicle before it fled south on Highway 97."

The Tiguan was quickly tracked down on Highway 97 near the Army Cadet Camp heading South.


Three occupants were arrested and taken into custody.





All three occupants of the vehicle were from the Lower Mainland. Two were released, the 28-year-old driver from Surrey was held in custody pending a court appearance.
