UPDATE: Japan Earthquake Death Toll Rises, Rescuers Die In Fiery Aircraft Collision

UPDATE: The death toll following the January 1st, 2024 earthquake in Japan continues to rise. Almost 60 persons have been confirmed to have died as a result of the quake. 5 Aboard a Coast Guard rescue aircraft died after a fiery collision at Tokyo Airport.

The race is on to find and rescue people trapped in collapsed buildings.

Adding to the New Year's Day tragedy, a passenger plane collided with a Coast Guard rescue aircraft killing 5.


The Japan Airlines plane was landing at Tokyo Airport Tuesday when it collided with the rescue aircraft killing 5 occupants. The Coast Guard pilot reportedly escaped.

All 379 occupants and crew of the passenger plane managed to escape.

The Coast Guard aircraft was scheduled to fly to the earthquake zone to help with recovery.


The cause of the collision is under investigation.






Original Story: 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on the first day of 2024. The quake occurred at 02:26 PST.

Japanese media is reporting dozens injured, and an unknown number of people are likely trapped in collapsed buildings.



The quake happened just after 4 pm local time. Fearing a repeat of the tragic loss of life that occurred after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, tsunami warnings were issued. Fortunately, there was only a minor rise in sea level.


Infrastructure was severely damaged in the quake-hit communities.
