March 15 2026 - Work on the replacement of the R.W. Bruhn Bridge has reached a major milestone, with crews beginning installation of the massive steel girders that will support the new structure.

According to the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Transit, the girder installation phase began in early March and is expected to continue through about mid-May.

Recent video captured at the site shows the early stages of girder placement as the framework of the new bridge begins to take shape above the water.

The work marks a significant step forward in construction of the new four-lane bridge that will replace the aging two-lane span carrying Trans-Canada Highway traffic across the channel between Shuswap Lake and Mara Lake in Sicamous.

Crews are working seven days a week, typically between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., as large steel sections are lifted into place and secured. The process can create periodic construction noise as the girders are aligned and bolted together.

Traffic disruptions will continue during the work.

Daily closures of the highway through Sicamous generally remain in place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with vehicles detoured via Highway 97A and Highway 97B.

The $224-million project will replace the current bridge and upgrade surrounding highway approaches.

Construction began in fall 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2027.
