Flash in Night Sky

🌠 Mysterious Flash Lights Up the Sky Over Vernon, BC

Vernon, BC — May 13, 2025: Even on a cloudy night, the sky can put on a show — and in the early hours of this morning, that’s exactly what happened over Vernon.

Flash in Night Sky

At approximately 2:18 AM local time, a sky-facing camera recorded a sudden, brilliant flash of light high above the city. The event lasted just about a second, flaring brightly and then vanishing without a trace.

So, what was it?

The footage was submitted to AI analysis for review, and several possible explanations were identified, starting with the most likely:

1. Meteor or Fireball: A small space rock entering Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, briefly burning bright as it disintegrates — consistent with the short duration and intensity of the flash.
2. Re-entering Space Debris: Less common but possible, a piece of human-made space junk could have burned up during re-entry, producing a flash similar to a meteor.
3. Satellite Glint or Aircraft Light: Although unlikely due to the short, stationary nature of the light, a sudden reflection off a satellite or aircraft can occasionally cause brief flashes in the sky.

Supernova? Definitely not. Those cosmic explosions unfold over days or weeks and remain visible far longer.

This morning’s flash remains a mystery — but a natural one. For night sky enthusiasts, it's a reminder: keep watching. Even under cloudy skies, the universe is still full of surprises.
