February 21 2026 - Claire Rattée, MLA for Skeena and Critic for Mental Health, Addictions and Housing Supports, is calling for answers following the death of a 22‑year‑old man in Vernon earlier this month.

In a statement posted on the Conservative Party of B.C. website, Rattée described the incident as a “systemic failure” in psychiatric care and government oversight.

She said the young man, identified in family accounts as Ezra Cool, had sought help at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for active psychosis and was certified under British Columbia’s Mental Health Act, which she said requires 24/7 supervision.

According to Rattée’s statement, six days later, the man left the hospital and was struck and killed on Highway 6. “This never should have been able to happen,” she said, calling on the Ministry of Health to provide answers and for an independent review into how certified patients can leave hospital supervision.

Rattée also stated that ongoing instability in Vernon’s psychiatric services, including what she described as recent resignations of psychiatrists, raises concerns about staffing levels and patient oversight. “Families are being told the system will protect their loved ones. In this case, it didn’t,” she said.

Interior Health has publicly confirmed it is reviewing the incident but has not yet released detailed findings.

The RCMP continue to seek dash‑cam footage and witnesses related to the hit‑and‑run collision that killed the man on Feb. 12.
