A Colourful Tradition: Vernon Quilt Show Stitches Together Community and Creativity

Vernon was treated to a burst of colour and craftsmanship this past weekend as the Vernon Silver Star Quilters (VSSQ) hosted their once-every-three-year quilt show at the Vernon Recreation Centre.

A Small Sample of Some of the Beautiful Work on Display

The two-day event, held September 26 and 27, drew crowds eager to admire more than 300 quilts—representing thousands of hours of work by local quilters whose dedication blends artistry with tradition.

The show’s theme, “Quilters are Piecemakers,” celebrated quilting’s deep roots.

Originating thousands of years ago as a practical method of sewing layers for warmth and protection, quilting has since evolved into an art form that tells stories, preserves heritage, and connects communities. From intricate patchwork classics to bold modern designs, the quilts on display reflected both tradition and innovation.

Alongside the quilt exhibits, visitors enjoyed bed-turning presentations, a bustling merchant mall, a packed gift shop, and the Members’ Quilt Challenge display. Admission supported the guild’s many activities, including workshops, retreats, and a strong commitment to community giving—last year alone, members donated dozens of quilts to local hospitals, schools, seniors’ homes, and support organizations.

Founded in 1986 as the Silver Star Quilting Squares, the guild has grown to nearly 200 members and became the Vernon Silver Star Quilters in 1999. Beyond creating beautiful works of textile art, the group is dedicated to teaching, sharing, and giving back to the community.

The VSSQ’s quilt show will return in 2028, but the guild continues its work year-round.

For newcomers interested in joining, the guild meets twice monthly at Grace Bible Church and prides itself on welcoming beginners and experienced quilters alike.
