Burnaby RCMP Constable Fatally Stabbed at Homeless Camp

An RCMP officer was fatally stabbed while on duty today in Burnaby British Columbia shortly after 11 am.

Part of the Burnaby RCMP's Mental Health and Homeless Outreach Team, 31-year-old Constable Shaelyn Yang was partnered with a Burnaby city worker at a transient camp near Broadview Park at Canada way and Curle avenue.


The pair were attempting to advise a man camping is not permitted when the altercation occurred.


Constable Yang received knife wounds in that altercation that would prove fatal. Before she succumbed to her injuries she managed to fire her sidearm, seriously injuring the suspect.


Yang, only 3 years with the RCMP, was rushed to nearby Burnaby General hospital where she died from her wounds.


The suspect was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.


On October 19, 2022, a charge of first degree murder was laid against 37-year old Jongwon Ham, of Burnaby, who remained in custody following his arrest on October 18.


Ham is reportedly known to police.

The Independent Investigations Office is investigating the police-involved shooting, and Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is investigating the murder of constable yang.

The "orange tent" has been in Broadview Park since at least June of 2022

Some media outlets are speculating an orange tent seen in Broadview Park may be associated with the suspect.


A tent has been in the park for some time. It was captured by Google Earth street view last June.




The senseless death of 31-year-old Constable Shaelyn Yang has shocked and saddened the entire province,


RCMP detachments lowered flags to half-staff, and fellow officers wore blue ribbons.


Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer for RCMP expressed the service's heartfelt condolences to Constable Yang's family, extended family, friends, and colleagues.


"Constable Shaelyn Yang was a wife, sister, and daughter and will be remembered as a kind and compassionate person''.
