Tractor-Trailer Crashes into Tow Truck Despite Flashing Lights, Driver Sentenced

April 202 2026 - Dramatic dash-camera video released by the BC Highway Patrol shows the devastating consequences of ignoring the “Slow Down and Move Over” law, after an Alberta truck driver plowed into a tow truck and a Mercedes on Highway 1 near Field in December 2023.

BC Highway Patrol emphasized the importance of the law, which requires drivers to slow to under 70 km/h when the posted limit is over 80 km/h when they see flashing amber, blue, or red lights.

The incident occurred just after 9:30 p.m. on December 8, 2023, in Yoho National Park.

A BC Highway Patrol officer and a tow truck operator were in the process of impounding a Mercedes for excessive speeding.

The tow truck’s flashing amber lights were clearly activated to warn approaching traffic.

Despite the bright warning lights, a 38-year-old man driving an eastbound tractor-trailer failed to slow down or change lanes. He slammed directly into the back of the tow truck, destroying the tow truck, the Mercedes, and heavily damaging his own tractor-trailer, which then rolled over.

Incredibly, the tow truck operator, the police officer, and the Mercedes driver had moved safely off to the side of the road and were not injured.

The tractor-trailer driver became trapped inside his overturned truck but survived the crash.

On April 8, 2026, the driver was sentenced in court after being found guilty of dangerous driving under section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code.

He received a six-month conditional sentence order, including 90 days of house arrest, a 12-month Canada-wide driving prohibition, and conditions prohibiting the possession or consumption of alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicating substances.

BC Highway Patrol Corporal Michael McLaughlin emphasized the importance of the law, which requires drivers to slow to under 70 km/h when the posted limit is over 80 km/h and to move over to the farthest safe lane when they see flashing amber, blue, or red lights.

“Normal speed limits exist for ideal conditions,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “When road workers or emergency responders are at the side of the road, you are legally required to slow down even more.”

The BC Highway Patrol released video footage from the tractor-trailer’s dash cam, the tow truck, and the police cruiser to highlight how quickly a failure to slow down and move over can turn into a life-threatening situation.
