A Saturday outing along Vernon's Grey Canal trail turned into a tense few moments for a three-legged dog and its owner near the Bella Vista trail parking area at the end of Sierra Road in Vernon.
February 20 2026 - Just before noon, a call went out to Vernon Fire Rescue Service after the dog slid over a steep bank and became stranded on a ledge, unable to climb back up.
The owner could not safely descend the embankment, and the dog, missing its right rear leg, was unable to retrace its path.
The owner said she didn’t know who else to call
Firefighters arrived within minutes, but by the time crews reached the scene, the adventurous pooch had managed to work its way to a more accessible area at the bottom of the bank.
Negotiating fences and thick brush, firefighters made their way down and, with their guidance, the dog, apparently none the worse for its adventure, was carefully walked up the brush-covered slope to a happy reunion with its relieved owner.
A small crowd that had gathered nearby cheered as the pair were reunited.
