Hydro outages affected nearly 6,000 BC Hydro customers during the hottest part of the day, with temperatures exceeding 39°C.
The current heat wave in Vernon and surrounding areas must certainly have exacerbated the discomfort caused by the short power outage. No power, no airconditioning.
BC Hydro reported that a substation fault was the cause of the interruption. The outage occurred on July 8 at 2:13 p.m. and was restored by 2:45 p.m.
The affected areas included regions west of Aberdeen Road and north of Commonage Road, impacting 4,279 customers.
Another outage affected Coldstream, Spallumcheen, and Vernon, east of Grey Canal Road, impacting 1,700 customers from 2:12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Parts of downtown Vernon, the airport, and areas towards Okanagan Lake were also affected. Fortunately, for those relying on air conditioning, power was restored after about 30 minutes. However, banks and other businesses had to temporarily close, and traffic was slowed due to traffic light outages.
The area continues to experience a heat wave.
