This is an UPDATE to a previous story.
Vernon, North Okanagan - In the early hours of August 19th, 2023, a brush fire near Highway 97 and 48th Ave prompted a response from authorities and firefighters.
The fire was contained at an encampment on the west side of the road. Tragically, a deceased person was located at the scene.
While no foul play is suspected, the BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the individual's death.
Further details about the victim are being withheld pending confirmation of identity and the notification of next-of-kin.
