Busy Year, Strong Support: Vernon Search and Rescue Reflects on 2025
January 2 2026 - Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) is closing the year with a clear message: 2025 was busy, demanding, and made possible by community support.

In a year-end post shared on social media this week, the volunteer-based organization revealed it responded to 72 task calls, contributing more than 17,000 volunteer hours, while also welcoming a new group of recruits into its ranks. The numbers highlight just how active VSAR has been across the North Okanagan and beyond.
Behind every callout is a wide range of specialized training. VSAR members are equipped for ground search and rescue, high-angle and rope rescues, swift water response, avalanche awareness, mountain rescue, helicopter operations, emergency medical response, and search management. The team is also called upon to assist with police evidence searches, BC Coroners Service recoveries, and emergency evacuations during disasters.
VSAR operates under the authority of the RCMP, which is responsible for search and rescue within its jurisdiction. Local volunteers respond when activated by police and regularly provide mutual aid to other search and rescue teams across British Columbia. Fire departments, emergency agencies, and, most importantly, members of the public in distress all rely on their service.
The organization also took time to thank those who help keep it operational. Local businesses such as Watkin Motors Ford, Intercontinental Truck Body, Air Rescue One, and King Fisher Boats were recognized for their support, along with neighbouring search and rescue teams and specialized dog units. Public donations and sponsors were also credited as essential to keeping the service running.
VSAR emphasized an important reminder to the public: search and rescue services do not come with a bill. Anyone in trouble, or with a loved one in distress, is encouraged to call 911 without hesitation.
Founded as a charitable volunteer organization, Vernon Search and Rescue depends on a combination of government support, community donations, business sponsorships, and the commitment of its highly trained volunteers, many of whom maintain the gear and skills needed to operate independently in extreme conditions for at least 24 hours at a time.
As outdoor activity continues year-round in the region, VSAR is urging residents and visitors to plan carefully, be prepared for the unexpected, and use caution in the backcountry.
Looking ahead, the team says it’s ready for whatever 2026 brings, continuing a long-standing mission of being there when help is needed most.
