August 2 2026 - A suspected human-caused wildfire discovered Saturday is burning out of control on the west side of Okanagan Lake, prompting evacuation alerts and drawing attention as far away as Vernon.
The Quilpituk Creek wildfire (fire number K51402) was first reported on August 1, 2026, and measured approximately 10 hectares as of the latest update early Sunday morning. It remains classified as out of control, meaning it is still spreading or is expected to spread beyond current control lines.
BC Wildfire Service crews from the Kamloops Fire Centre, supported by the North Westside Fire Department, are responding.
An NVIS (night-vision imaging system) helicopter group, one monitoring aircraft and one equipped with a belly tank, has also been assigned to the incident.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan has issued an evacuation alert for the La Casa area due to the fire.
Residents in the alert zone are urged to be ready to leave on short notice.
Additional orders and alerts are in effect in nearby areas, including north of Nahun and south of La Casa, as well as the Blue Grouse Creek area.
Officials stress that the fire poses a potential threat to people and homes.
Locals report the glow of the fire is clearly visible at night from Adventure Bay in Vernon, across the lake, underscoring how the blaze is standing out under current conditions.
