An overtime ban that began on Saturday, September 28, has resulted in staffing shortages, leading to service interruptions.
Both the Needles Ferry and the Arrow Park Ferry have had service suspended due to these shortages.
In a press release, the BCGEU expressed concerns about what it describes as overworked ferry staff in the Kootenays, claiming that approximately 30% of work hours are currently being filled through overtime.
BCGEU President Paul Finch highlighted the strain on workers and the potential safety risks stemming from these extended hours without sufficient rest.
WaterBridge Ferries, which has operated the service since 2012, is working to maintain essential ferry crossings.
The BC Labour Relations Board has designated the service as essential, meaning emergency vehicles and other critical services will still be accommodated.
Travelers are advised to check DriveBCÂ for the latest updates on service disruptions.
Essential services, as designated by the BC Labour Relations Board, will continue and include:
Children traveling to/from school
Emergency vehicles (RCMP, ambulance, fire, BC Hydro)
Health care professionals and individuals attending medical appointments
Individuals with health emergencies
Note: These schedules are subject to change without notice. BCGEU strike action may affect operations.
