Shortly before 12 noon Thursday, 911 operators started receiving reports thick black smoke was coming from a room at the Polson Park Motel.
Upon arrival, Vernon Fire Rescue located the fire in the motel's lower level.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the building was ventilated.
Staff and guests were evacuated and the building was searched for possible victims.
No reports of injuries or cause at this point.
Highway 97/32 Street between 24th and 23rd Avenues was down to one lane southbound for a short time.
