There is a protected wetland and a small pond near the eastern base of Middleton Mountain.
During the winter when the pond is frozen and the marsh is covered with snow, there is little sign of life.
That all changes with the spring thaw.
Pheasants, muskrats, turtles, and a variety of birds quickly return to feed, mate, and raise their young. The area is also home to the endangered spadefoot toad.
